The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has funded 16 proposals with a total of $26 million in funding for the Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program.

NSERC characterizes the CREATE Program as an “investment will spur the creation of 16 innovative training programs that will facilitate the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce while tackling crucial science and engineering challenges.”

NSERC said the “programs funded in 2024 will support training and mentoring programs in a range of critical areas, including agriculture and food security; biotechnologies and immunotherapies; public health and health equity; robotics; technological infrastructure security; data science; plastics management; and climate science and ecosystem restoration.”

The proposals funded are:

Sustainable Data Systems for Data Science, Bettina Kemme, McGill University, $1.65M.

NSERC CREATE in Engineering Health Equity: A Training Program in Design and Translation of Frugal Medical Technologies – James Lacefield, Western University, $1.65M.

Training Biology Students for Jobs in Data Science (TrainBioData) – Artur Luczak, Lethbridge University, $1.65M.

PLASTICS: Plastic Affordance through Science and Technology Innovation for Circular Solutions – James McLellan, Queens University, $1.65M.
